Elgin, located 40 mi (64 km) northwest of Chicago, offers some of the state's finest examples of historic architecture, including homes and landmarks in Victorian and Queen Anne style. The elegant grandeur of Elgin's most impressive homes reflect the affluence and prosperity of the city, once known as a significant watch manufacturing center, a history that is chronicled at the Elgin Area Historical Museum. Several golf courses and parks, including the 112-acre Lords Park, facilitate a host of outdoor activities. Visitors' gaming needs are satiated at Grand Victoria Casino, a decadent riverboat casino with entertainment events and a number of restaurants. From mid-September to early June, the Elgin Symphony Orchestra provides a series of performances that emphasize classical pieces.
